How to play

Vroomle is a free daily time-trial racing game in your browser.

Every day there is one new race track, the same for everyone in the world. You get three laps to set your fastest time, then see how you rank against every other player. A new track arrives each day at midnight UTC.

Your day in four steps

Start run. Your car waits on pole position under the start lights.
Watch the lights. Five red lights come on, one a second. After a short, random wait they all go out: go!
Drive the lap. Follow the road through the corners to the chequered finish line. The clock runs from lights out to the line.
Next lap or Submit. After each lap, drive another while you still have laps, or Submit to put your time on today's leaderboard.

The start

Don't press accelerate or reverse while any red light is on. That is a jump start, and it adds 0.750 seconds to your lap.

Holding the pedal down through the lights doesn't help either: a key still held when the lights go out does nothing until you let go and press it again. The quickest start is to wait, watch, and press the moment the lights go out.

Reading the screen

TIME is your lap time. LAP shows which lap you're on.
The lap is split into three sectors (S1, S2, S3). As you cross each sector line, its chip lights up:
- Purple: the fastest anyone has driven that sector today.
- Green: your best ever in that sector today.
- Red: slower than your best.
The difference to your best floats up from your car at each sector line.
The home screen shows a map of today's whole track before you start.

Ghosts

Before a run you can race a see-through ghost car: My best (your fastest lap today), Top time (today's fastest lap by anyone, when available) or No ghost. Ghosts can't touch you; they show where the time is.

What you'll meet on the track

Hazard	What it does
Gravel and mud	Less grip and more drag: the car slows and slides
Oil	Very little grip. Keep the wheel straight and ease through
Water	Costs speed when you drive in, and makes steering slower
Boost strip	A burst of speed, once per strip
Speed section	Less drag, so the car runs faster than usual along it
Cones and barriers	Solid. Hitting them costs speed
Moving obstacles	Move back and forth on a steady rhythm: time your pass
Open edges	No wall at the side of the road, so a wide line runs onto the grass

Tips for a faster lap

React to the lights going out. Guessing costs 0.750 seconds when you're early.
Brake in a straight line before a corner, then turn in. Braking mid-corner slides the car.
Walls let you glance off, but every touch costs speed. Clean laps are fast laps.
Watch the sector colours to see where you gain and where you lose.
Race your own ghost: it shows the line and braking points of your best lap.
If you've spun or stopped facing the wrong way, press R (keyboard) to be put back on the track at the same point. The clock keeps running, so it's best saved for real trouble.

Streaks, colours and finishes

Submit a lap every day to grow your streak. Longer streaks unlock new car colours in the Garage. Top places on a day's leaderboard win special finishes such as Gold, Diamond and Galaxy. See the rules for exactly how.
